Christchurch in Moreton runs a Men's Breakfast on the third Saturday of every month. It's a chance for men to talk, share thoughts, hear a short talk and enjoy a big hearty full English.
For more than fifteen years men have been forming an orderly queue at the serving hatch at Christchurch Parish Centre, eagerly awaiting their expertly cooked breakfast of bacon, sausage, hash browns, black pudding, fried eggs and toast, all served with a mug of tea or orange juice.
As the name suggests, this is a men-only event, to provide a forum where men can talk freely and share in men's fellowship. It was formed in recognition that sharing feelings and emotions doesn't always come easy to men and that men seldom have a chance to get to know their fellow churchgoers during a normal Sunday service.
Steve Smith, PCC member and Safeguarding Officer for the church, runs the breakfast operation, and along with his two volunteer helpers, Les and Bob, cook and serve breakfast with smooth military precision timing. There isn't a set charge for the meal, though there's a suggested donation of around £4.00 to help cover costs.
Conversations around the tables range from discussions about personal problems to talk of tools and DIY advice.
At the end of the breakfast, there's a short talk from an invited speaker who will speak about a topic based on the theme for the year. This year's theme is 'Men on a Mission', a phrase that could also be used to describe those who organise the breakfast, but also those who just can't resist a fry-up.
The breakfast takes place at 8:45 on the third Saturday of each month. Every man is welcome - you don't have to attend Christchurch or be a Christian, so why not give it a try and share in some men's fellowship.
