The next Diocesan Synod has been cancelled due to the developing Coronavirus situation. It was due to meet on Saturday 21 March.
The decision was taken by the Diocesan Secretary in consultation with Bishop Keith Sinclair, Acting Bishop of Chester, and the Chairs of the Houses of Laity and Clergy.
Diocesan Secretary, George Colville, has written to all Diocesan Synod Members to inform them.
The letter reads:
Dear Diocesan Synod Members
In the light of Coronavirus (Covid-19) we have been carefully considering whether the Diocesan Synod on 21st March 2020 should go ahead.
Following consultation with Bishop Keith and the Chairs of the Houses, a decision has been made to cancel the Diocesan Synod this Saturday 21 March. This is in line with similar decisions being taken in a number of other dioceses at this time.
We have a reserve date set for a Diocesan Synod on Saturday 13 June. Please can you keep this date in your diaries and we will keep under review using this date as an alternative for the business that was expected to take place this Saturday.
Most of the business on the agenda is not immediately time-critical. If the June Diocesan Synod date takes place we can discuss the electoral areas for laity at that meeting but will be taking legal advice in the interim on what is the default position otherwise.
As regards to other Church House and diocesan events please continue to consult the E-Bulletin, your emails, and the diocesan website in this fast-moving situation.
George Colville,
Diocesan Secretary
