For the second year in a row, St Michael’s Church in Middlewich partnered with its local running group, Run Middlewich, to organise a charity half-marathon event
It took place on 21 August and the primary objective was to raise funds for the charities St Michael’s has committed itself to support, but also provide an opportunity to build on the church’s links with the wider community.
The Rector, the Revd Simon Drew, said: "Last year’s event was such a success that Run Middlewich demanded that we organise another one this year. It was hard work but also great fun for all involved and many people completed their first-ever half-marathon run as a result. This was a wonderful opportunity to engage with our community, and support our charities – and all done in Jesus’ name."
In total, 42 runners ran the half-marathon, starting and finishing in the churchyard where race registration, first-aid, and refreshments were based. The event has raised around £1,500 so far with donations still drifting in. The Revd Simon Drew says: "More important, however, are the relationships that have been built with others in the community."
Some of the runners commented that the event was, "unique and wonderful with a great atmosphere", another said, "Without the help of the Church Volunteers and Run Middewich Volunteers this event would have been possible! The runners really appreciated all the encouragement they got along the way!"
Eco-friendly wooden medals were a great hit as well.
