The Director of Ministry, the Revd Canon Dr Christopher Burkett, and the Continuing Ministerial Development Adviser, the Revd David Herbert, are due to retire on 31 July.
Of his time in post, Christopher says: "My greatest joy in ministry has been learning – my own and other people’s – and the excitement of it has never left me. It’s been a privilege, at home and abroad, to learn with others more of Christ and his purposes for us. I wholeheartedly believe theology is for everyone. I’ve had great colleagues and exemplars at every stage of my ministry, and I give prayerful thanks for them. I finish, as I began, convinced by the words of my mentor, Bishop Lesslie Newbigin, that our participation in Christ’s priesthood is exercised ‘not within the walls of the Church but in the daily business of the world.’ That’s where theology really counts."
The Revd David Herbert, started his role full-time in April 2009, having done some of the work on a part-time basis from 2004.
David says: "There has never been a dull moment. It has been a pleasure and privilege to support so many well-motivated people and to work alongside so many committed to continuing ministerial development. We just carry on learning – thank God."
We hope there will be further opportunities before 31 July for David and Christopher to reflect on their role and time ministering with people and parishes in the Diocese of Chester.
