The Revd Liz Shercliff is the Director of Studies for Readers. Her newly published book, The Present Preacher: Discerning God in the Now, is a practical, confidence-building guide for all who want to develop their preaching "by homing in on that which points to God in the now."
It encourages preachers, both ordained and lay to make authentic connections with others, it demonstrates that preaching in today’s culture requires preachers to "show up and be present, in person" rather than act as a religious spokesperson who takes no responsibility for their message.

Liz says: "Preaching has moved on in the last fifty or so years. If you read a passage from the Bible and you're going to preach on it, you will always interpret it according to your own experiences."
Liz argues that preachers need to be "present" in order to impart their own experiences and connect with the congregation on a level that goes beyond simply reading a passage in the Bible.
One of her memorable preaching moments was when she referenced Star Wars during a sermon and was surprised to find the congregation became quite vocal, chipping in with the conversation - "I couldn't shut them up!", says Liz.
Preaching isn't just for clergy; Readers and others in church leadership might also be required to preach too.
