Clergy Moves and Notices – June 2024

The following have been announced since March 2024:


APPOINTMENTS

BARRETT   Victoria Louise:    Currently Vicar of Thornton Hough (0912), in the deanery of Wirral South, now also Rural Dean of the Deanery of Wirral South, with effect from 17 April 2024.
CERVAL-PENA   Anna   Currently Assistant Curate of the parishes of Sutton St James (1517), Bosley (1503), Wildboarclough (1519) and Wincle (1520), in the Deanery of Macclesfield, to be Vicar of the parish of Sutton St James (1517), in the Deanery of Macclesfield, with effect from 5 July 2024.

CURRIE   Lesley Sarah:    Currently Associate Minister of the parish of Marple (1107), in the Deanery of Chadkirk, and Dean of Women in Ministry, to also be Chaplain to the Bishops of Birkenhead and Stockport, with effect from 4 June 2024.

FROST   Jonathan Anthony (Jonny):    Currently Assistant Curate in the parish of Hurdsfield (1507), in the Deanery of Macclesfield, to be Interim Priest-in-Charge of Leasowe (0702), in the Deanery of Wallasey, with effect from 15 July 2024.

JAMESON   Beverley Joyce:    Remaining Rector of the parish of St Mary the Virgin, Lymm (0411), now also Rural Dean of the Deanery of Great Budworth, with effect from 30 May 2024.

KNIGHT   Andrew William (Dr):    Currently Vicar in the benefice of Partington and Carrington (1008), in the Deanery of Bowdon, and Rural Dean of the Deanery of Bowdon, to be Incumbent of the parish of Bowdon (1006), in the Deanery of Bowdon, with effect from 4 September 2024, also remaining as Rural Dean.

LEES-SMITH   Anthony James:    Currently Vicar of St Denys Evington in the Diocese of Leicester, to be Residentiary Canon Missioner of Chester Cathedral, with effect from 27 July 2024.

NAYLOR   Anne-Marie:    Currently Rector of the parishes of Astbury (1303) and Smallwood (1320), in the Deanery of Congleton, to be Vicar of the parish of Chester St Oswald with St Thomas of Canterbury (0220), in the Deanery of Chester, with effect from 15 October 2024.

NEWELL   Rachel Leanne:    Formerly Team Vicar of Dudley, in the Diocese of Worcester, now Rector of Ellesmere Port (0906), in the deanery of Wirral South, with effect from 29 May 2024.

WHITE   Elaine Shirley:    Remaining Chaplain to the Hospice of the Good Shepherd in Backford, to also be Priest-in-Charge of the parishes of Backford (0901) and Capenhurst (0904), in the Deanery of Wirral South, with effect from 23 July 2024.

WOODS   Dorothy (Dot):    Currently Self-supporting Minister in the parishes of Betley and Madeley, in the Diocese of Lichfield, to be Assistant Curate (known as Assistant Priest) of the parish of St Mary Nantwich (1717), in the Deanery of Nantwich, with effect from 8 September 2024.


RESIGNATIONS/LEAVERS

ALLDRIDGE Dimitri:    Associate Minister of the parish of Hartford St John (0605), in the deanery of Middlewich, resigned with effect from 8 June 2024.

GLOVER   Elisabeth Ann:  Remaining Vicar of the parish of Eastham St Mary (0905), in the deanery of Wirral South, ended as Rural Dean of the Deanery of Wirral South, with effect from 16 April 2024.

KENNEDY   Joseph:   Currently Vicar of the parish of St Saviour, Oxton (0105), in the deanery of Birkenhead, to be Consecrated as Bishop of Burnley 19 July 2024.


RETIREMENTS

PAGE   David James:    Currently Vicar of the parish of St Peter, Elworth (1312), in the deanery of Congleton.  Retiring with effect from 31 October 2024.


DEATHS

We are sorry to have to report the death of the following members of clergy.  Our sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time.

BOWERS   John Edward William:    Canon Bowers served his entire ministry in Chester Diocese; he was ordained as Deacon in 1963 and as Priest in 1964. Following his curacy at St Barnabas, Bromborough he became an Industrial Chaplain, during which time he was also Priest-in-Charge at St Peter, Crewe (1968-1971) and then Vicar of St Michael and All Angels, Crewe (1971-1974). He then moved to become Team Rector of Ellesmere Port, before becoming Vicar of St Barnabas, Hattersley, during this time he was also Rural Dean of Mottram (1988-1991) and became an Honorary Canon of Chester Cathedral (1980-2002). In 1991 he became Vicar of St Boniface, Bunbury and Tilstone Fearnall and then took on the role of Priest-in-Charge of St Chad, Leasowe from 1998 until his retirement in 2002. He continued to serve Chester Diocese with PTO from 2002 and still had active PTO at the time of his death.  Died 24 May 2024.

CHRISTENSEN   Norman Peter:    Canon Christensen served his entire ministry in Chester Diocese; he was ordained Deacon in 1965 and Priest in 1966.  Following a curacy at Barnston, Canon Christensen became Vicar at Over St John (1970-1977) and then Rector of Bromborough (1977-1992) during which time he was also Rural Dean of Wirral South (1986-1992).  Made Honorary Canon of Chester Cathedral in 1990, Canon Christenson then took up the role of Chaplain to Arrowe Park Hospital (1992-1996) before becoming Vicar of Higher Bebington (1996-2002).  Canon Christensen retired in 2002 when he was granted PTO in Chester Diocese, which he held until 2019.  Died 7 May 2024.

HEWETSON   Christopher:    The Venerable Christopher Hewetson was ordained in Gloucester Diocese as Deacon in 1969 and as Priest in 1970. Following curacies in St Peter, Leckhampton (Gloucester) (1969-1971) and All Saints, Wokingham (Oxford) (1971-1973), he became Vicar of St Peter, Didcot in 1973, moving to become Rector at All Saints, Ascot Heath in 1982. During his time at Ascot Heath, Christopher also served as Rural Dean of Bracknell (1986-1990), before moving on to become Priest-in-Charge at Holy Trinity, Headington Quarry (1990 – 1994).  During this period, he was appointed as an Honorary Canon at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford (1992-1994) and was also appointed Rural Dean of Cowley in 1994. During 1994 Christopher was chosen to be Archdeacon of Chester, a role that he held until his retirement in 2002. Having retired he moved to Exeter and was appointed Bishop's Adviser for Spirituality in Exeter Diocese (2003-2007). In retirement Christopher held PTO in Chester Diocese (2005-2010) and in Bath and Wells Diocese (2009-2013). Died 2 April 2024.

REEVE   Brian Charles:    Canon Reeve was ordained Deacon in 1961 and Priest in 1962. Following curacies at Eccleston St Luke (Liverpool) (1961-1963) and Upton (Overchurch) St Mary (Chester) (1963-1965), Canon Reeve became Vicar at Macclesfield Christ Church in 1968.   He was later vicar of Christ Church Stone, Lichfield (1973-1984) serving also as Rural Dean of Trentham (1977-1984), before returning to Chester Diocese as Vicar of All Saints Hoole (1984-1994) and Chaplain at Chester City Hospital (1984-1991). After further appointments as Priest in Charge at Alderley (1994-2001), Diocesan Warden of Readers (1994-2000) and Honorary Canon at Chester Cathedral (1994-2001), Canon Reeve retired to Stone in Lichfield Diocese. In retirement Canon Reeve held PTO in Chester Diocese (2002-2014) and Lichfield Diocese (2009-2019). Died 18 April 2024.

SMALLEY   Stephen Stewart:    The Very Reverend Dr Stephen Stewart Smalley was ordained in London Diocese as Deacon in 1958 and as priest in 1960, serving his curacy at St Paul, Portman Square (1958-1960). He was then University Chaplain at Peterhouse Cambridge (1960-1963). From 1963 to 1969 he served abroad as Lecturer RS at Ibadan University in Nigeria. He returned to the UK in 1970 to be Lecturer in Theology at Manchester University (1970-1977). He then became Canon Residentiary and Precentor Coventry Cathedral (1977-1987), during which time he was also Vice-Provost (1986-1987) at Coventry Cathedral. He was then appointed Dean of Chester Cathedral in 1987, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. In Later years he held PTO in Gloucester Diocese (2002-2016) before moving back to Chester Diocese. Stephen was involved in the setting up of the Diocesan Link with the Anglican Church of Melanesia and laid the foundation stone of Chester Rest House in Honiara, capital of the Solomon Islands.  Died 19 May 2024
