Studying to become a Reader

Readers in the Church of England are lay people who serve in a vital ministry role. Their responsibilities include leading public worship, preaching, teaching, assisting at the Eucharist, and engaging in pastoral and evangelistic work. Some Readers may also conduct funerals after additional training. Importantly, Reader ministry is nationally recognized and transferable within the Church of England.

As theologically trained lay individuals, Readers play a crucial role in the church’s public ministry. They lead worship, teach, preach, and engage in various missional and pastoral contexts. Their ministry extends beyond the church walls, reaching the wider community. Canon law (Canons E4, 5 & 6) governs the office of Reader in the Church of England.

The specific ministry of each Reader varies based on their unique gifts and mission context.

In the video below Bishop’s Adviser for Licensed Lay Ministers: Jeanette Howe, speaks with Bip Choudhury, who is currently enrolled on a Reader training course.
