The Diocese of Chester is aware of media reports of residents in Winsford “cleaning” churchyard headstones and memorials.
We would wish to strongly advise against anyone undertaking this action without the express permission of the memorial owner and the local Parochial Church Council.
Historic England consider the cleaning of memorials to be a complex issue and a major intervention. They also advise that removal of biological growth, although well-intentioned, is often damaging.
Whilst the actions of the local resident were entirely well-meaning, permission was not sought on this occasion.
The Incumbent of St Chad’s has been in touch with the resident and has invited him to join Friends of St Chad’s Churchyard, a new group that is restoring the site and providing the community with both conservation and educational opportunities.
The Diocese of Chester is thrilled with the interest being shown in the beautiful churchyard at St Chad’s and hope we can all play our part in ensuring it continues to be a place of welcome, dignity, and peace.
