Domestic abuse incidents increase

The Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser, Pauline Butterfield, has warned that the number of domestic abuse incidents has has "increased significantly" and many people are at continuing risk.

She says: "We are hearing much in the media at present about the plight of victims of domestic abuse during this lockdown period. The number of domestic incidents has increased significantly and many people are at continuing risk."

To combat this, she has drawn up a list of support organisations for those concerned by domestic abuse and is encouraging people and parishes to circulate the information through parish websites and newsletters.

The National Domestic Abuse helpline has seen a 25% increase in calls and online requests for help since the lockdown, the charity Refuge.

It has received hundreds more calls as restrictions heighten domestic tensions and cut off escape routes.

Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser is also reminding people that those suffering domestic abuse can leave their homes to access help: "The Government has said that those suffering from domestic abuse can leave their homes to access help."
