DAVID OKETE VUVUIRI VUNAGI
Sir David Ok
ete Vuvuiri Vunagi, GCMG, former Governor-General of the Solomon Islands, has passed away. Sir David served as Governor-General from 2019 to 2024 and was the Archbishop of Melanesia and Bishop of the Diocese of Central Melanesia from 2009 to 2015. Vunagi was a dedicated educator, priest, and leader, with a significant background in education, theology, and public service. Born in Samasodu, Isabel Province, he had a distinguished career, which included roles in teaching, church leadership, and government service.
In a joint tribute, Mark Tanner, Bishop of Chester and Sam Corley, Bishop of Stockport said: "Archbishop David was a remarkable servant of God as a priest, bishop, educator and Governor General. Many in the Diocese and elsewhere in the UK will have fond memories of his warmth, wisdom, compassion and joy in the Lord, and of his commitment to the partnership between ACOM and the Diocese of Chester. We grieve his passing and assure Mary and their family, Archbishop Leonard and all our sisters and brothers in Melanesia of our love and prayers at this time of loss."
