Effective Communication for Ministers

Georgie is a communication coach with 25 years’ experience of teaching, training, talking to audiences and helping people to express themselves with confidence and impact.

Effective communication is essential to effective ministry. Being good at public speaking is not a talent people are either born with or they’re not: anyone and everyone can learn to excel at it.

In an hour and a half of one-to-one coaching, I can give you the tools you need to be an effective, confident speaker:

1. Effective delivery

How to make best use of your voice, how to stand and move, how to connect and build rapport with the people you’re talking to

2. Practical preparation

How to compose and structure your sermon or talk so it’s as easy as possible to deliver and has maximum impact

3. Psychological preparation

How to reduce – or even eliminate – nerves and set the scene for success

Through the combination of practical and psychological preparation, you’ll be able to deliver sermons your congregation will listen to and remember.

One-to-one coaching is focused and efficient. It’s also completely confidential.

About half my clients reach breakthrough by the end of the session. Of the others, about half choose to have more coaching and the rest know they’ve got what they need and work on it by themselves.

Outside your private home space, all speaking is public speaking. From a conversation with one parishioner, through preaching in church and training volunteers, to presenting at a conference of thousands, the principles are the same. Once you’ve learnt them, these principles will support you in any situation where you need to communicate clearly and confidently.

A bit about me

My name is Georgie and I’ve been addressing audiences, in one context or another, for over 25 years. I’m fascinated by all aspects of human communication; I spent 10 years running a language school and 4 years (part time) studying psychotherapy. These days, I’m a keynote speaker too but at heart I’m a teacher/trainer and I thrive on helping people to find their voices, build their confidence and put themselves across successfully.

My sister and brother-in-law are vicars, in the south of England, and they often talk about the stress public speaking causes some clergy and the difficulty some ministers have in holding the attention of their congregations. As a public-speaking coach (based in Manchester), I can help and I’m keen to do so.

I work with businesspeople, academics, charity volunteers, doctors, nurses, magicians… anyone who needs to be able to communicate effectively. This includes authors preparing for book launches and bookshop events, where they read aloud from their books and answer questions. Alongside public speaking, public reading is an art that improves dramatically with a bit of coaching.
