A spectacular display of twelve huge silk panels retelling the creation story from the first pages of the Bible opened at Chester Cathedral this week. ‘Threads through Creation’ is a vibrant combination of silks, hand-dyed materials, metallic leathers, gold leaf – with miles of thread and eight million stitches!
Artist Jacqui Parkinson’s work is eye-catching, attractive, and highly accessible for viewers of all ages. She uses fascinating, unique techniques that produce a feast for the eye.
Jacqui says; “My work is all about engaging people with the Bible story, offering encouragement and opening up opportunities for interesting discussions. In this exhibition, my aim is to capture the wonderful extravagance of the creation story - and to delight everyone who views the panels. Despite Adam and Eve’s fall from grace, it remains a story of love and promise, something we can all do with these days.”
Cathedral Vice Dean, Canon Jane Brooke adds; “I’m delighted that Jacqui’s ‘Threads’ series is returning to the Cathedral once again. ‘Threads through Revelation’ visited Chester Cathedral in 2017 and was immensely popular; I’m hopeful this exhibition – of four joyful, exuberant, exciting pieces - will repeat its success.”
The enormous panels, 2.5m high and as wide as 3.5m, start with strong elemental pieces illustrating the first days of creation, onto complex and lush work as we enter the Garden of Eden. This is a hugely enjoyable exhibition to see.
Threads through Creation opened on Wednesday 12 January and will remain open until Tuesday 1 March. The exhibition is open Monday - Saturday 10am – 4pm and Sunday 12 noon – 4pm. Entry is by donation.
