Wilmslow

St Bartholomew with St Anne’s, Wilmslow

Appointment of Rector

Applications are invited for the rich and interesting post of Rector of Wilmslow, a substantial parish and community in the historic county of Cheshire, and on the outskirts of the modern Manchester conurbation.

The Parish

The population of the parish is slowly growing, and is now approaching 20,000.

The grade 1 listed parish church of St Bartholomew has a prominent and central location.   In recent years extensive repairs and re-ordering have been undertaken, and a new meeting room, and modern facilities added.  There is also a substantial Parish Hall nearby.

The daughter Church of St Anne’s is in good repair, and also has a Hall.  The parish halls are well-used by the wider community.

The present Rectory has been assessed as being over-large, and in a poor state of repair.  The Diocese is currently seeking to replace it with a modern, well-insulated house which meets the standards and size which are recommended by the Church Commissioners.  It is not expected to be difficult to find a suitable house.

While the housing predominantly reflects the prosperous suburbs, 25% represents private or housing association rented accommodation.   Overall, Wilmslow is a diverse community which the parish seeks to serve through its two centres of worship, and a range of activities.

Churchmanship

The parish stands in a broad Anglican tradition, and seeks to draw worshippers from across a diverse spectrum.   The more traditional, choral-based and sacramental worship at St Bartholomew’s has always been complemented by a simpler style at St Anne’s, and more recently a new initiative, the Mustard Seed Cafe, has developed a new informal style of worship for children and their parents.

The Rector will need to feel at home across this spectrum of liturgical activity, and be able to be a focus of unity for the parish as a whole.

The parish will welcome a priest of spiritual depth and pastoral ability who is called to be the new Rector.  He or she could come from a range of previous backgrounds and experience, but will need to have an open and inclusive approach to parish life.

Person Specification

The parish has summarised its hopes for the new Rector in the Parish Profile.

Staff

Details of the current Ministry Team are provided in the Parish Profile.

A stipendiary curate, Kirsty Allen, is due to be ordained to a title post in the parish next July.   If the new Rector is not yet in post she will be supervised by the SSM Canon Professor Roger Yates.

Sandi Fisher is both a SSM in the parish as a whole, and is also paid as a part-time Children’s and Youth Minister.

Further details are in the Parish Profile.

Finance

The parish finances are sound, but undergirded rather more by legacies than is desirable in the longer term.

A full set of parish accounts is available below.
