The Principal, Governors and CDAT Board of this forward-thinking school are looking to appoint an inspirational, strategic and highly motivated Vice Principal.  The post holder will work closely with the Principal to build on the current successes of the school.

St Matthew’s is a popular, one form entry, Church of England Primary school with growing numbers.  This will initially be a non-class based position with significant opportunities to lead on a range of responsibilities across key stages.

During this season of Lent, you might find the resources provided by the Archbishop of York Youth Trust of interest to use with your pupils.

Last year The Archbishop of York Youth Trust had a fantastic response to their 40 days of kindness challenge. This Lent the Youth Trust Team are challenging young people to use this time to reflect on 6 key topics:  Faith, Wisdom, Hope, Community, Respect & Dignity, Action.


You can download a free resource pack for each week in Lent that unpacks the 6 key topics including:

* A key Bible verse

* Explanation on the topic

* Questions to ponder and discuss

* Challenge to Action

* A prayer

The resources are designed to encourage pupils during Lent to think about giving up and giving out to others, and serving the world around them. 6 challenges are suggested for each week, which can be completed individually or in groups.

‘Valuing All God’s Children’ - Free Anti Bullying Training for our Diocesan Schools, delivered by Stonewall

Stonewall’s course gives one teacher the skills, tools and confidence to train their colleagues to tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and language in school. This CPD accredited course is in line with legal and Ofsted requirements, including the new Valuing All God’s Children (2017) guidance for Church of England schools. Throughout the one day training there are opportunities to identify barriers and challenges, to talk through practical strategies and share best practice.  

All attending schools become Stonewall School Champions for one year, receiving support from a dedicated Education team at Stonewall, new resources and access to Bronze, Silver then Gold Awards.

This course usually costs £200 + VAT per school, but has been funded by the Department for Education and Government Equalities Office in order to offer this course for free for a limited number of church schools.

The training taking place on Tuesday 12th June 2018 at Church House is now fully booked.  However, we are planning to arrange a further date and are compiling a reserve list.  If you are interested in reserving a place, please contact and we will confirm the details of this in due course. 

Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. A maximum of one place per school will be given.

NEW SIAMS Framework Training for Headteachers and Governors

A welcome from the new Director of Education

I am delighted to have taken up post as the new Diocesan Director of Education, from this September, working on behalf of the Diocesan Board of Education.  It is a great honour and privilege to have been given this opportunity to further strengthen our work and partnership with our church schools across the Diocese of Chester, as we strive to ensure the very best outcomes for every child and young person in our care.  There is much to celebrate across our church schools and despite some of the challenges that lie ahead, this is an exciting time as we look to shape church schools of the future, working in partnership to deliver a shared vision of excellence in education for our children and young people which is deeply Christian, with the promise by Jesus of ‘life in all its fullness’ at its heart. I look forward to continuing the conversation and working with you in the months and years ahead.

Unlocking Gifts Project

The Unlocking Gifts Project, funded by the Jerusalem Trust, offered schools the opportunity to generate ideas on how to focus resources on relatively simple programmes to make a difference to the most disadvantaged groups.  This report shows how nine different projects were able to help pupils to achieve, be the best they can be, flourish and have 'life in all its fullness.'  Download a copy

New RE Syllabus for Primary Schools

The new and widely-anticipated Diocesan syllabus for primary schools was approved at the recent meeting of the DBE. Produced by Jane Brooke and Sue Glover with the support of a number of teachers across the Diocese, the syllabus is based on eleven Christian concepts and can be seen here. It is strongly recommended for use in all our schools.

There are now support documents to assist in assessing RE in the new RE Syllabus.  To see them, click here.

With the greater move to academy status, Chester Diocesan Academies Trust (CDAT) has been restructured to be available for any of our schools that would like to become an academy as part of a multi-academy trust. Chester Diocesan Board of Education actively encourages Diocesan schools to consider joining CDAT.

Becoming an Academy

Before applying to become an Academy, schools must have the consent of the DBE. This will only be given if certain conditions are met - particularly that church- based legal documents are used. For further information click here.
