New artwork in churches

Guidance on introducing new stained glass windows, paintings, banners and other artworks

The DAC supports in principle the introduction of new artwork to churches.  Its concerns will be that the subject matter is inspiring, thelogically clear and well executed.  It's really important, from all points of view, that any proposal gets off on the right foot - particularly if your church building is highly listed and/or if your proposals would have a significant effect on the worship space.

The DAC therefore urges parishes to submit their ideas (normally as an outline sketch or conept) at an early stage for informal feedback.  This avoids delay and nugatory costs.  It also reassures any donors that the project is moving forward constructively.

There's some really helpful guidance available from the Churchcare web page on introducing new art.

The DAC Office - The office of the Diocesan Advisory Commitee (DAC) has responsibility for progressing faculty applications and providing policy advice on church building matters.  The answer to most popular enquiries will be available via these web pages but do contact the DAC Office if not.  Where appropriate, the DAC Office can put you in touch with churches who have undertaken similar work to any scheme you might be proposing yourself.
