Memorial Safety Testing

Official Government guidance on what parishes need to do to keep their churchyard memorials safe

Parishes are responsible for ensuring that memorials in churchyards are tested and reviewed for safety.

They can either source training to do the testing themselves or engage a company to do the testing for them. Dunn & Co (based in Neston, Wirral) cover both services.  They are often used by churches in the Diocese and can be contacted through their website

Revised guidance on Managing the Safety of Burial Ground Memorials was issued by the Ministry of Justice in 2009.  This moved away from use of "topple tester" mechanical devices in favour of a "hand test" as set out at paragraphs 13-18 of that guidance.

The DAC Office - The office of the Diocesan Advisory Commitee (DAC) has responsibility for progressing faculty applications and providing policy advice on church building matters.  The answer to most popular enquiries will be available via these web pages but do contact the DAC Office if not.  Where appropriate, the DAC Office can put you in touch with churches who have undertaken similar work to any scheme you might be proposing yourself.
