Archdeacons' Inspections

It is a national church requirement that the archdeacon inspects each parish in the archdeaconry once every  three years. This is different from the Quinquennial Inspection, at which an architect gives a detailed report on the state of the church building.

The Archdeacon’s Inspection is a check that the administration of the church is being run properly. So it includes inspection of church registers and records, insurance policies, the church log book, the inventory etc.

It is also an opportunity for the archdeacon to have a general discussion with the incumbent and churchwardens
about developments in the life of the parish.

The relevant archdeacon’s office will contact parishes in advance of when an inspection is due, to arrange a date. Attached to this page is a downloadable checklist which details the items parishes need to have ready for the Archdeacon’s Inspection.
