Rethinking Apologetics

Date: 8th November 2017

Time: 10:00 - 15:30

Try asking a room full of Christian leaders what they think about apologetics. How would they respond? Some would speak of dusty arguments, too clever by half. Others would surely describe bad-tempered wrangles and intellectual squabbles. How much better, many people would feel, to avoid all of this and get back to the simple Gospel message!

Rethinking Apologetics is a one-day course which aims to persuade that apologetics is not about the abstract and the argumentative, but is for everyone. It’s about real people and real situations – in fact, its whole purpose is to equip us to root our conversations about Jesus in the culture of our own day.

The course is for licensed ministers, both lay and ordained. We shall ask how we can explain the Gospel in ways that make sense in our communities, and how we can communicate the attractiveness and joy of the Gospel to our culture. In answering these questions, we shall examine together the witness of the New Testament and look at a range of examples of good apologetics in Christian history, as well as asking questions about contemporary secularism and postmodernity. There will be plenty of opportunities to develop ideas and discuss options in small group work throughout the day.

The day is led by the Revd Dr Joe Kennedy, Lecturer in Theology at St Mellitus College, where he teaches both apologetics and missiology. In addition, Joe is Vicar of Oxton St Saviour in Birkenhead. Before coming to Oxton six years ago, Joe was Principal of the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield, and Dean and Fellow of Selywn College in the University of Cambridge.
